Keeping your transmission serviced properly can save you from expensive repairs. A transmission is the component that allows the power of the engine to drive the wheels of a car. An operating transmission is a finely tuned dance between the mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems controlled by a computer. There are gears, pumps, valves, seals, gaskets, cables and other parts that all must work in concert. In other words, this is a complex mega-system that quite simply makes the car move. Without a transmission, the car goes nowhere under its own power.
In most cases it is advisable to have an automatic transmission’s fluid and filter changed every 4 years or 40,000 miles, to keep it in good working order. This is especially important if the vehicle is more than five years old. Many vehicles newer than five years old may need scheduled service less often. We will use Mercedes Guidelines for the correct interval for your specific model.
There are exceptions, if your Mercedes-Benz is driven hard, tows a trailer, goes off-road etc. Under these conditions, the fluid and filter may need to be changed more often -- every 2 years or 20,000 miles --because clutch and band material can clog the filter causing the fluid pump to starve for fluid. By not providing adequate lubrication can cause excessive heat and premature failure.
The harder the transmission works, the hotter the fluid gets and the quicker the fluid breaks down. To find out the recommended service schedule for your vehicle’s transmission, check the owner’s manual or give us a call.
Manual transmissions generally need no regularly scheduled service. Simple fluid inspection can be performed. A manual transmission may need service due to worn clutch and throw-out bearings and broken synchromesh gears.
